Ultrasonography is used as a diagnostic tool in veterinary medicine as it is in human medicine. Ultrasonography allows us to non-invasively visualize, study and measure many internal structures using sound waves. An example of its use is shown above with a feline patient who has impaired cardiac (heart) function. The aim of the examination is to visualize various parts of the heart muscle, valves and vessels in real time and measure and assess their function so that the veterinarians have a greater understanding of the patients condition, and be better able to provide therapies, treatments and options for the cat.
